The DfE has today published revised statutory guidance to local authorities entitled “Promoting the education of looked after children”.

The guidance replaces the previous guidance issued in 2010 and is mandatory in application, unless there are exceptional circumstances which justify departing from it.  The guidance applies to: local authority officers, in particular Directors of Children’s Services; VSHs; social workers; officers carrying out a local authority’s function as a school admission authority; special educational needs departments; Independent Reviewing Officers (IROs); personal advisers; care leaving services and Lead Members for Children’s Services.

The guidance can be found here.
